Canvas Prints: Wrapping the image around the frame and preventing losing subject matter
Photos generally aren’t taken with the intention of being turned into canvas photo prints. This can sometimes mean that the subject is perfectly framed for viewing on a computer monitor or printed as a photo but not for printing on canvas and wrapping around a wooden frame. Important aspects of the image can be lost around the sides and back of the frame and so the photo loses impact.

How to prevent losing important parts of the photo when creating an image for canvas printing

There are a variety of techniques that can be used to keep as much of the photograph as possible on the front face of the canvas print,

1. The focus point of the image has plenty of space around the sides that can be wrapped around the canvas frame sides without affecting the impact of the image.

This is the simple option and doesn’t require any modifications to the image. The image below shows an image printed on canvas and wrapped around the frame sides (gallery wrapped).

2. The focus point of the image has a bit of space around the sides but not enough for wrapping around the frames.

In this instance the edges can be extended by copying and mirroring the edges.  This adds more image for printing and wrapping when framing the canvas. The images below show how the edges have been extended by copying and mirroring.

3. The focus point of the image doesn’t have any spare space for wrapping and can’t be mirrored for wrapping.

In this case the edges of the canvas print can be either left as white canvas or printed a solid colour or pattern. The image will be printed on the front face of the canvas print and the sides printed with another colour, left as white canvas or printed with a pattern.
