It would be nice to be able to say forever, but like everything, display environment and conditions will have an affect on your canvas prints. The most important factors in canvas printing that will determine the life span of the canvas prints are the canvas type and inks used. Poor quality canvas made from materials other than cotton will deteriorate at a faster rate than canvas prints made using 100% canvas. Art galleries displaying paintings hundreds of years old survive and they are all using cotton canvas. The most important factor to consider when buying canvas printing is to check what types of inks are used. Cheaper, dye based inks provide stunning print quality but if printed on canvas must be display behind UV protective glass. If not, as soon as the canvas prints are exposed to sunlight deterioration will begin and in a matter of weeks your canvas  prints will looks faded and dull. It is not recommended that canvas prints are displayed in areas which are subject to considerable temperature changes, like directly above a radiator or of course a fire! Areas with high moisture levels should also be avoided. These can include bathrooms and kitchens. Dust and a natural build up of dirt can also damage canvas printing. At ESJ Designs we give each canvas three coats of a water proof and UV protective matte varnish. This not only provides the canvas prints with an attractive finish but also means that if your canvas prints become dusty, a light wipe with a damp cloth will be sufficient to clean them.

It is important to consider these factors when buying canvas prints, especially as cost is generally the deciding factor.
